Need power supply for project
Hi,
I am making a water cooler for a Tig welding machine using parts from a PC water cooling system. So far I have a small radiator, two fans and a small pump. I will be making an aluminium reservoir to supply the coolant but what I really need is to find a suitable power supply that will take 240v (from the mains) and convert it to 12VDC and with multiple outputs with enough amperage to run all my components. I think the pump requires 2amps and the fans run on approx. 0.15amps each. I have thought about using a PC power supply unit but it just seems OTT as most of the wiring and functions it powers would not be used and only a couple of auxilliary output would be needed.
Can anyone think of a suitable PSU that I can use which can be hooked up to my components and that I could rob from some mainstream electrical device (i.e. that is cheap!).
Thanks
Andy

Re: Need power supply for project
Transformer to drop to 12 volts then a full wave rectifier then a regulator.
Re: Need power supply for project
Thanks for that but afraid I'm a total novice when it comes to electronics so any help on where I could get these parts from (and an explanation at to what they do) would be a help.
Cheers

That could work if it was possible to split the output into three to power my three compoments. Would this be ok?

Well the unit can cope with 5 amps as far as I can see, dropping down to 4 amps if you use it at around 13.5 volts.
So you have a pump at 2 amps and a couple of other bits running at less than an amp, So yes it should cope well.
It looks like it comes with a connector ' tree ' .So it would be a matter of just making plugs
from your equipment (if they havent got them already) and plugging onto the tree.
If you think the tree is a bit too large with too many connectors, then maplin probably has much smaller versions you can adapt?
Also your working with DC so make sure you get the polarities right if you have to make plugs etc ,IE positive to positive and negative to negative - otherwise the pump/fan will work in the wrong direction you want it to go

Ok thanks for that, sounds like a plan. All my components currently have 4-pin molex connectors as they're designed for a PC but I have a few of those spare so I should be able to cobble some connections together.
