Sounds good. If I bought something like this, would it work?

You need other circuits to go with it but it could be done.
In the bit that chimes there are circuits which can be tapped into, when you push the button instead of switching a chime circuit, it switches maybe a flipflop which powers a relay, maybe via a transistor and resistors, which switches the light on, push it again and the light switches off.
I don't know exactly what circuits are in the chime so don't know how easy or difficult it is to do.
You need to do the work and I don't know how easy or difficult you will find it.
I don't mind giving ongoing advice, I should think I and others on here could do it, I should think I could.

Its kind of a bit of a gamble, the odds depend on your skill and/or patience and how it is made, I should think it is fairly straight forward, but might be quite difficult to do online. I need you to answer questions, upload photos, and use a multi meter, if you want to proceed.

haha ok.
Well I have very basic knowledge atm and had to look up what a multimeter is. Will need to buy one of those. Will definately be back here if i get time to proceed

Hi, I would recommend a cheap digital multi meter with DC 10 amp function, you don't need 10amp for this project but I recommend 10amp function because a multi meter can be used for other projects, and you will probably regret not getting 10amp function at a later date and have to get another meter. EBay ...less than £10.

The bell might be very easy, but I don't know until I have a look inside.
Electronics is a great life skill and well worth the effort in the long term.

I recommend a good book on electronics or electricity. I started with electricity made simple which is now out of print (99p/eBay).I recommend that book to anyone particularly those interested in power supplies. I have also read electronics made simple but would not recommend it, in my opinion it is crap, so simple as to tell you nothing whilst covering many subjects so incompletely as to be useless.

Perhaps someone one here could recommend a better modern beginners book. Electronics for dummies, I have not seen or read maybe its good maybe not. Advice needed here forum.

If you go ahead with the bell project I am happy to help, if not perhaps others looking for a similar project will take on the project and you can copy... Watch this space.

I am working nights until new year, lots on, time as you say.

A quick way to adapt, could be to put a LED across the buzzer, linking it to a light dependent resistance [LDR] circuit with relay output.

Thanks, I will definately have a look if I get time. I am actually half way through Electronics for Dummies, theory is pretty decent but gets pretty complex in some areas pretty quick. Will be back if I get time to proceed, may be unexpectedly busy in next couple months.

Get a multi meter ... Maybe a cheap electronics kit, ie a bag of components and a bread board, maybe srip board, a few transistors, resistors, LEDs, 555timers etc, and start again.
It will be easier on second reading.
