it has the markings 503M 8032 and three legs from what i can work out it should be 50x3 so 150k but when i measure the outside legs i get a reading of 0.943k so i am a little confused

The "503" seems to be 50Kohms, that is 50 multiplied by a 1 followed by 3 zeros.

50 * 1000 = 50000

Make sure when you measure that the three pins are disconected from the circuit. Anything in parallel with the pot will invalidate the measurement.

Moreover, thanks to that notation, when I recently asked for a lot of 500 Ohms multiturn presets, the guy at the counter did not see the trap and provided them marked "500". When measured, I realized that they were just 50 Ohms only. They should have been "501".
