Transistors

Hi there folks,
I'm new to this electronics thing so forgive me if my question sounds lame.
Can I have the emitter of a transistor paralleled off to it's own base? So I could have a switch that when it's made provides the voltage for the transistors base, but then the emitter has a link off itself to the base so when the switch is turned off, the transistor keeps feeding itself (see attachment)?
