I'm working on an electronic project that will be used on a sailing boat.

I'm looking for a waterproof case that can be totally immersed in water.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

See http://www.electronics2000.co.uk/data/i ... rating.php for an explanation of the IP ratings, IPx8 (probably IP68) is suitable for long term immersion. You don't say if the box will be permanently underwater in use or if it just needs to resist heavy spray / waves. You'd need to check the material for resistance to salt water and any other chemicals it is likely to come into contact with.

I checked out a number of companies and prices ranged between £8 and £40.

Then I discovered a web site all about hobbyists building underwater ROVs - apparently the best thing to do is visit the local plumb centre where they stock a full range of piping, etc, that's ideal for making a waterproof case! Not elegant but very cheap and perfect for the job

Remember water is a very patience,stealthy invader
IE it can wait for ages before it decides to test your enclosure and trash your equipment when you least expect it.

So pay particular attention to where cables are entering the enclosure and make good seals in the pipes and a good gasket where you open the box .
Stuff like silicon gel , plumbers putty or plumbers tape can be of great help in making good seals .
