Newbie looking for parts

Post by kohoutek » Wed Oct 20, 2010 12:54 pm

Hi New to electronics, but willing to learn.
Thanks for letting me join your forum, i have recently purchased a 1990 pinball machine and am looking to replace a part

Ceramic Resistor
id No
IRC 8951 PW5 1.5K 5%

Oblong block shaped approx 24mm L x 10mm W/D

Are these still available?
Or is there an equivalent?

This has malfunctioned and stopped the illumination on the certain part of the play field.
I have checked all the 4 fuses for the general illumination and they are all fine, but noticed this resistor is getting hot, compared to all the others on the PCB.

Any help would be appreciated

Live in the Warrington area.

Hi Again

I have been browsing the pinball schematics and understand that the Resistor is called a Sand type not a Ceramic type.

Hope this helps

Michael

From the markings it seems to be a 5W 1.5k resistor you need. Ceramic should be fine provided the wattage and resistance is correct - in fact I suspect 'sand' resistors are an old name for the same things.

It's the sort of thing Maplin would used to have had, they have 7W wirewound types that would do the job (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=2179), but they don't have anything over 1k. You could look at using 2 in series to give the value you need, or try a large supplier such as Farnell or RS, the only problem being that both have a £20 (I think) minimum order value.
