proximity switch for carbon fiber toneoarm

Post by Pierre » Tue Jan 14, 2014 10:41 pm

I am planning to create a circuit with a push solenoid electromagnet to automatically lift the arm of my turntable when it finishes playing a record. I was thinking of using a momentary push button that will be hit by the arm and will close a circuit and operate the electromagnet tho move the lever that lift the arm. However I realise that the pressure that the tonearm can put on a button is probably very small (?), so I was thinking of using a proximity switch. The tone arm is carbon fiber, so inductive switch would not work unless I fix a piece of metal to the tonearm. But how big this need to be?. Instead, would using a capacitive proximity switch work? I am no expert and it's the first project I am trying to do. Help would be most appreciated.

You could of course opted for an IR emitter and receiver using the arm to cut the IR beam but glad to hear you have it working.
